Plex Media Server issues

Hi,
I've been running Plex probably 6 or 7 years now. I've always been a big fan of it, but I've always found little annoyances that really bother me. Typically simple things that just don't seem to work or give me an inconsistent behavior. After running very old versions of both the server and the client, about a month ago I updated everything to the latest and great and purchased Plex pass since it was only $75 since I've been a member for so long. Now I run Plex Media Server (2.6.1) and Plex Media Player (1.1.1) on a MAC Mini that is running OS X 10.11 which i believe is the latest, I had to upgrade that in order to upgrade PMS/PMP.

After the initial rebuild and upgrade of all applications, for the most part things seemed to be operating well. I was happy with the upgrade, the look of the new Plex server and player was awesome, nice and clean. After running for about a month or so, once again there are a few small simple things that have me just about ready to abandon the Plex ship all together because i'm frustrated. I am hoping that someone on this forum might be able to help me get these issues fixed otherwise i'm going to start moving towards alternatives.

Issue #1: New movies are currently not being added to Plex Media Server. I added about 6 new movies to an existing movie directory on an external hard drive that is part of my Movies library. After running an "Update Library" the new titles are not visible or available for playback. I've rebooted PMS and the mac multiple times, it doesn't seem to help. I've ran an Analyze, a Refresh All, and multiple update library's against my movies library and it just wont detect the new titles.

Issue #2. Manually updating Poster and Background images inside of Plex Media Server. I have a few movies that are not scraping their posters, or some i'd like to choose an alternative image. Every time I go to Choose an Image, Drag and Drop, or enter a URL I get "there was an error uploading this artwork - try again" or "Your Changes Could Not Be Saved." I know this worked on previous versions of server, why is it not working now. I've got local artwork stored in the same directory as the movie title, I've tried jpeg, bmp, I've tried grabbing URLs from the internet. Whatever i try to do it appears to fail. I only have 1 account on my Mac and one account in Plex, as far as I can tell both should have full access to the entire system including the external drives as attached storage.

I have turned the debug log up to verbose on Plex Media Server but I do not know how to read it. I could paste it in here but it's lengthy amount of text so i'm not sure if there is any benefit to what's in there.

These both seem to be pretty simple things but in the little bit of googling I've done it sounds like other people have seen these issues some people have not found resolution. Are these bugs or are these issues with my setup? In all honesty i'm seriously starting to look at Kodi as a potential alternative solution because frankly I just don't have the time to screw around with this anymore, I need something that just works.

If anyone has any tips I would appreciate the help.
Thanks

Update: all my movies are basically in a directory \Movies\Title (Year) format.

TV Shows showing episode number but not name

Hey guys, brand new to using Plex and having an issue with TV Shows. I only have one series to test it on, which is Street Outlaws. My issue is that for the title, once imported, it just shows the episode number and not the name. I used FileBot and it did recognize my episodes as they were labeled on my hard drive. Here's a screenshot of the issue.

Here's my current file structure with the episode 3 as an example.

TV Shows
--- Street Outlaws
------ Season 04
--------- Street Outlaws - 4x03 - Ova for Murder Nova?.mp4

This is a link to thetvdb for season 4 http://thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=270202&seasonid=608615&lid=7

Thanks in advance for the help.

[BUG] Track repeats forever

Playing music off my external hard drive, i'll get one or two songs into an album and a track will get caught in a loop (I've obviously checked that repeat is off).

See attached example, the time elapsed will read 4:29 / 3:43 (track has been playing for 4min 29 sec out of 3min43sec total track time. You can hear the song get about halfway through then skip back to the start.
This is the first time I've started using Plex to play music, but obviously this makes using it as my principal player unworkable.

The error doesn't happen on every track, but has occurred at some point in each of the three albums I've played (maybe track one, maybe kicking in at track 3-4).

I'm on El Capitan with Plex Pass, using Safari as my browser. Using a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010). Log files are attached.

#Help Managing non-https://thetvdb.com/ series - invisible filesystem folder categories/tags

Hey,

Thanks for wicked software

In an effort to move away from Google's awful UI I've been choosing to download YouTube video recently; rather than stream (I classify YouTube channels content as rudimentary TV series/shows). Using https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/sections/200059498-Naming-and-Organizing-TV-Shows everything plays nice in Plex web player:

foo (2001)
|-foo - s01e01 - 2001-01-01 Episode 1
|-foo - s01e02 - 2001-01-02 Episode 2
|-foo - s01e03 - 2001-01-03 Episode 3
bar (2002)
baz (2003)

However, I'm starting to accumulate lots of YouTube shows and I'd like some way (i.e. convention) to group/tag them in the filesystem that also plays nice with Plex player; like an invisible category/tag

Neither of the obvious solutions work:

a) add parent folder

| youtube
|-foo (2001)
|-bar (2002)
|-baz (2003)

b) add folder name prefix

y foo (2001)
y bar (2002)
y baz (2003)

Is this solvable - I'd really like to consume this content inside Plex?

Hope to hear back

Kind thanks

Confused about right app for Mac

I have PMS set up on a dedicated PC linked to a NAS in my study. However, I am confused about the best application to run on 2 Macbooks to access and sync the media (when away from the network)? I presume i don't download PMS again to each Macbook?

Or do I just use the web app in Safari? If I use the web app how do I access synced content when offline or away from my network?

Many thanks

PMS using a lot of outbound bandwidth

Shortly after starting up, PMS starts to use between 200KB/sec and 2.2MB/sec of outbound bandwidth.

Remote access has been disabled on my server. I've changed my password and forced re-authentication on all devices.

When the bandwidth is being used, the server status shows no active sessions.

I've blocked a few IPs, but as soon as I block one, another steps in and starts sucking bandwidth.

I don't have a cloud server set up.

Right now, Plex is uploading a lot of data to 45.79.142.250, which seems to be owned by an ISP called Linode, an ISP I've seen mentioned here as a host for Plex pubsub servers.

I'm certain that it is Plex that's using the bandwidth because the moment I quit PMS, outbound bandwidth drops dramatically.

I'm running Plex 0.9.16.6 on MacOS 10.10.5

I've tried reinstalling Plex, but that's made no difference.

Has anyone seen this behavior? Obviously, I've stopped using Plex until I can sort this out.

Bug? Media skipping after Home Theater being idle

Intermittent problem I've been running into for a few months. Randomly I will start a show and it will start skipping by a few seconds and the audio is choppy. Stopping and restarting the media doesn't help. I have to restart the mac mini to get it to play correctly. It's intermittent, sometimes it works just fine and other times I have to restart.

Currently running version 1.4.1.469 of Home Theater on the Mac Mini and Server 0.9.16.6 on my NAS. I believe this problem is going to be related to the Home Theater as I am ONLY experiencing the issue on the mac mini. The same issue does not exist on any of the other players I have available.

All my power settings on the mac mini are disabled, so it doesn't sleep. I have not been able to track it down to specific media, after a restart the exact media that was skipping will play fine.

Any assistance on how I would debug this would be much appreciated.

Don't drop Snow Leopard support!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

$

Plex Media Server - Transcoder Preview: 0.9.17.0
– (OS X) Mac OS versions 10.6 and 10.7 are no longer supported.

No, no, NOOOOOOOO! Don't drop support for Snow Leopard!!!

Snow Leopard was the last version of OS X that was worth a damn: the best, most trouble-free OS Apple ever released, the veritable WinXP of Mac!

Ever since:
– Wi-Fi is unreliable
– Mail is unreliable
– Networking is unreliable
– Safari is unreliable
– The new system font causes eye strain within minutes of use
– The interface looks like it’s from McDonalds
– Text is blurry

Now we understand completely that Apple has made it very hard for developers to support all but the very latest versions of OS X, but this isn't a question of us being too lazy to upgrade, or legacy apps. Rather, it's that Apple has thrown us under the bus, beginning with 10.7, in terms of usability, functionality, and the user-friendly GUI to which we'd become accustomed. Snow Leopard is the Windows XP of Apple: the last OS worth a damn.

For this reason, Snow Leopard's installed base is still greater than that of Lion and Mountain Lion:

Look at all the other developers who continue to release Snow Leopard-compatible titles every single day!

http://download.cnet.com/mac/3151-20_4-0.html?osNamesExact=Mac+OS+X+10.6

Please reconsider: keep the old Xcode & SDKs around and go to the extra trouble of maintaining Snow Leopard support! Many are holding on to Snow Leopard for dear life:

Can the database be backed and move from one mac to another?

$

Ok, My mac mini can't be upgrade to 10.8+, it was why I was using a media center. Now that the latest version Plex Media needs 10.8, I have another mac mini that is running 10.8, but I don't want to spend the months I did to fix all the broken media. It would be nice to move the media server database to the new server. Can this be done?

Also, PLEASE SENT OUT ANNOUNCE and not just post the forum. I don't go to the forum unless there is an issue. I be I am not alone.

Actor thumbnails all point to the same image

Heres an odd one. Ive noticed lately that I was getting odd actor thumbs where the same image was appearing in every movie I have on my PMS. Someone suggested looking at the XML of the movie and sure enough all the actor image links point to the same image (see below for an example for the movie 50 First Dates).

Any idea what could have caused this and more importantly how to fix it?

Background Art

I run my Plex Server on a Mac-Mini & usually watch it on either my AppleTV or XBOX One. I think that is awesome & love that the UI has been flattened & more cohesive between platforms. That being said, I have all of this awesome background art for all of my movies, tv shows, & music. Unfortunately they don't really get any love at all, either being blurred beyond recognition or dimmed. The background art (IMHO) typically look better than the posters. Also posters are portrait images & backgrounds are widescreen. Is there any way to give the background art a more prominent position? In the old days of skinning I used to like the Night skin because it gave all sort of love to these awesome background images.

Media Server won't start

I installed Plex Media Server today and have been trying to get it started but it's not starting, it's just comes up with the banner in the middle of the screen saying "please wait a moment while the media server starts for the first time". It's been doing that for a few hours now. Thoughts?

Help with playback

Hello,

I have been having some issues using Plex at my new house. In the past I have always run the Plex software on my MacBook, I would then just stream it over my WiFi provided from AT&T to my Roku. I never had a problem at the old house, but the new house is not near a major city so the internet is just slower. This causes bad buffering problems when I try to play anything from my HDD using Plex. Even on the lowest video setting it will still causes buffering issues. I am able to stream Netflix and other streaming services fine using my Roku. Is there any other way I can set up playback? I had someone saw I can stream over LAN, but I'm not real sure how to set it up. I only have a small amount of computer knowledge. Would I need an extra computer that would be used as a server? Can I set something up that would just stream from my Mac to the Roku and would just skip my WiFi? Any info would be helpful. Again I do not know too much so any step by step articles would be great. Thank you in advance.

Bug Report: Merging Not Working as Expected

Plex Media Server prevents screensaver from starting and display from sleeping

$

Hey Plex Team,

Running Plex Media Server will not allow my screensaver to start OR my displays to turn off. While I understand running Plex Media Sever may stop the computer from sleeping, I would expect it not to prevent my screensaver and subsequently my display from sleeping.

I have only recently noticed this happening and as such, believe it may be a bug in recent versions.
