Plex Media Server is sporadically very slow to list content or return search results

$

I have a problem with my copy of PMS where it will randomly be very slow. This slowness includes:

  • returning search results, which can take upwards of 10-15 seconds instead of being instant
  • listing my TV shows, music, or movies
  • listing the contents of a specific TV show or music album
  • playing a particularly piece of content -- it can spin for upwards of 10-15 seconds
  • sometimes never returning search results at all -- it will just spin indefinitely

I'm running Plex clients from my web browser, Apple TV 4th gen, and iPhone 6S. PMS is running on a dedicated media server that is a mid 2010 Mac Mini with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 GB of RAM running OS X 10.11.4. All of my media is spread about among two 4 TB external hard drives connected using USB 3 or Firewire 800. The only other application running on this server is qBittorrent, which is generally idling.

The majority of the time I don't experience this slowness, and I've been unable to figure out what the root cause is. Here are some things I've checked or tried and subsequently ruled out as solutions:

  • qBittorrent interfering. The slowness doesn't correspond with times where qBittorrent is active and using CPU cycles or hitting my disks.
  • Friends or family streaming my media. This slowness has occurred when no one is streaming anything, and has failed to occur when someone was streaming something.
  • My server being too slow. A friend is running PMS on a dedicated server that's an even slower, older Mac with a similarly sized library and he experiences no slowness at all. Search results are near-instant.
  • My server not having enough memory. The combined memory usage of everything that's running is less than 2 GB.
  • My hard drives going to sleep. I've set it up so that the drives never sleep, and have confirmed this is the case.
  • Network slowness. This occurs even when streaming media over my local LAN with all devices involved being connected through wired ethernet.
  • Wireless data slowness. This occurs frequently when I'm using my phone and I'm not connected to a wifi, but that's not the issue either because two of my friend's Plex libraries return instant search results in the same situation.
  • My router. This issue has persisted over more than one router.
  • Failure to optimize my library. Optimizing my library seems to make the problem go away for up to an hour, but it returns shortly afterwards.
  • My hard drives having poor read or seek times. I've confirmed that they perform normally for a USB 3 or Firewire 800 external drive.
  • Destroying and recreating my library: I tried this with my music library recently and it had no effect.
  • Checking PMS logs: I haven't found anything revealing in there, aside from the occasional "SLOW QUERY" message, which usually is in the range of 250-1000 ms.

The only thing I can think of at this point that I haven't tried is blowing away my entire library and starting again from scratch, but I really, really don't want to do that. I like having it keep track of when I've played various media, what's next, what music albums were added when, and so on, and I really don't want to lose any of that metadata.

Can anyone help me diagnose what's going wrong? This is very frustrating, and it feels like my media server fails to perform at times when I want it to perform most. (e.g. trying to quickly put on a song while I'm in my car, and after entering a search query it just spins forever, never giving me any results)

Unable to Connect to Server

Ever since the last OSX update I cannot use my Mac server to connect to Plex on my PS4 or Xbox One. I get this message 'Unable to Connect; your Plex Media server and device are on different subnets, try blah blah blah and I've tried it all and nothing is working. I know this is a common issue and instead of pulling my hair out I would like to know if this is something you are trying to fix, or if I have a long wait ahead while paying for the service. Please help!

Plex Media Server won't play specific MP4 files on TiVo, but will on Apple (El Capitan) computer.

When I try to use Plex on my TiVo to play any shows from a specific TV series that is stored on my computer as MP4 files, Plex simply quits. This has never happened before. On my Apple computer, these shows will play in Plex or in the Apple DVD player. As I was initially experiencing this problem, I tried to play a show from a different TV series which I have been able to do before. Now when I try to play anything from that series, using Plex on my TiVo, I get: "There was a problem playing this item. The video did not start playing in time." But, at least Plex doesn't quit. This series will, however, play on my computer. I have other TV series which continue to play within Plex on the TiVo with no apparent problem.

Plex Media Server asks for permission to allow network connections each time I login.

I am running El Capitan on an iMac and I have set up my Firewall to allow network connections to Plex Media Server, but each time I sign in I get a popup box asking for Plex Media Server.app to allow network connections. How do I correct that?
I tried using the Terminal command: sudo code sign —force —sign - /Applications/Plex\ Media\ Server.app/ and I got the message: /Applications/Plex Media Server.app/: replacing existing signature
xcrun: error: invalid active developer path (/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools), missing xcrun at: /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/xcrun
/Applications/Plex Media Server.app/: the codesign_allocate helper tool cannot be found or used
What do I do now?

#Help Managing non-https://thetvdb.com/ series - invisible filesystem folder categories/tags

Hey,

Thanks for wicked software

In an effort to move away from Google's awful UI I've been choosing to download YouTube video recently; rather than stream (I classify YouTube channels content as rudimentary TV series/shows). Using https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/sections/200059498-Naming-and-Organizing-TV-Shows everything plays nice in Plex web player:

foo (2001)
|-foo - s01e01 - 2001-01-01 Episode 1
|-foo - s01e02 - 2001-01-02 Episode 2
|-foo - s01e03 - 2001-01-03 Episode 3
bar (2002)
baz (2003)

However, I'm starting to accumulate lots of YouTube shows and I'd like some way (i.e. convention) to group/tag them in the filesystem that also plays nice with Plex player; like an invisible category/tag

Neither of the obvious solutions work:

a) add parent folder

| youtube
|-foo (2001)
|-bar (2002)
|-baz (2003)

b) add folder name prefix

y foo (2001)
y bar (2002)
y baz (2003)

Is this solvable - I'd really like to consume this content inside Plex?

Hope to hear back

Kind thanks

I can't open the media server on my macbook pro retina. I have this problem since one of the latest updates.
I deleted the app a couple of time and reinstalled it, nothing works!

Plex will not add any new movies or files just says " unable to save file"

I have not been able to say a new movie in over a month, and it doesn't remove any I deleted a month ago as well. I even deleted all my library and playlists, and when it said I need to load folders for the dashboard, I selected ADD and selected my video folders and it says "cannot save blah bllah blah" ...why? please don't give me IT jargon, this should not be programmer terms to simply add folders that it previously added. Have they tweeked with this program so much it just doesn't work any longer? maddening, use to be so easy, simple and workable, now noting works.

Experiencing Loss of Wifi Signal with Dedicated Macbook Air Media Server

I am using a dedicated MacBook Air as our Plex Media Server (running OS X El Capitan 10.11.5). We use AppleTVs (4th generation) and iPads/iPhones for our playback. The server computer loses its WiFi connection randomly and often when:
* adobe has a new update and sends a notification
* OS X has an update
* and other similar items (information about apps or programs not able to be disabled under "notifications")
I have the computer set to accept no notifications, but that's for existing "apps". I am also running Caffeine so it doesn't go to sleep. It is also in Do Not Disturb mode 24/7.

Is there anything I am missing?
- Thanks

Plex won't open on OSX 10.5.8

I recently installed Plex media server on my Mac and it won't open at all. There isn't even an icon when I copy it to my desktop. Basically I click on it and nothing happens at all. I have tried deleting it (from applications, etc.) and reinstalling on several different browsers but there is no change.

The file doesn't seem to download correctly no matter what I do.

What's the problem here?

Setting path for local media assets change path for ALL

I think this is a bug, but I honestly can't remember if this is the way it has always been or not.

When I set a path for ANY local media agent, the path is changed for the local media agent for ALL types.

I assume this is NOT the way it is supposed to work since the header in the pop up says "Local Media Assets (media_type) Settings".

Possibly related, the text above the text box where the path is display says "Local music video path" for ALL the agents, even though the header has the correct media type.

I can still select a single movie, chose Tags and Collection, but that is a long way to the goal. Is it me or is it Plex?

Apple's new Photos application

Hi,

Plex has worked for me since I've began to use it.  All my content (movies, home video's and photos) are streamed to my other devices.

I made a big mistake recently though  .  I have installed the new Photos application in OS Yosemite and my Aperture library has been moved/changed to Photos.

Now I can't see my photos anymore in Plex.  So I thought I just had to change the settings (Server>Channels) and set the Aperture (or iPhoto) library path to the location of the new Photos library, but this doesn't seem to work.

Also, I tried to make a regular channel for pictures, but this doesn't work either, as you have to choose a regular folder containing your pictures, while Apple stuffs all your pictures into a weird maze of folders and files (see att) when using one of their photo album applications...

So I would like to know if there an update coming from Plex, taking into account the new Photos application?

Or any other suggestions (other than to ditch Apple or their applications :P ...)?

Thanks,

Vincent

Plex Media Server issues

$

Hi,
I've been running Plex probably 6 or 7 years now. I've always been a big fan of it, but I've always found little annoyances that really bother me. Typically simple things that just don't seem to work or give me an inconsistent behavior. After running very old versions of both the server and the client, about a month ago I updated everything to the latest and great and purchased Plex pass since it was only $75 since I've been a member for so long. Now I run Plex Media Server (2.6.1) and Plex Media Player (1.1.1) on a MAC Mini that is running OS X 10.11 which i believe is the latest, I had to upgrade that in order to upgrade PMS/PMP.

After the initial rebuild and upgrade of all applications, for the most part things seemed to be operating well. I was happy with the upgrade, the look of the new Plex server and player was awesome, nice and clean. After running for about a month or so, once again there are a few small simple things that have me just about ready to abandon the Plex ship all together because i'm frustrated. I am hoping that someone on this forum might be able to help me get these issues fixed otherwise i'm going to start moving towards alternatives.

Issue #1: New movies are currently not being added to Plex Media Server. I added about 6 new movies to an existing movie directory on an external hard drive that is part of my Movies library. After running an "Update Library" the new titles are not visible or available for playback. I've rebooted PMS and the mac multiple times, it doesn't seem to help. I've ran an Analyze, a Refresh All, and multiple update library's against my movies library and it just wont detect the new titles.

Issue #2. Manually updating Poster and Background images inside of Plex Media Server. I have a few movies that are not scraping their posters, or some i'd like to choose an alternative image. Every time I go to Choose an Image, Drag and Drop, or enter a URL I get "there was an error uploading this artwork - try again" or "Your Changes Could Not Be Saved." I know this worked on previous versions of server, why is it not working now. I've got local artwork stored in the same directory as the movie title, I've tried jpeg, bmp, I've tried grabbing URLs from the internet. Whatever i try to do it appears to fail. I only have 1 account on my Mac and one account in Plex, as far as I can tell both should have full access to the entire system including the external drives as attached storage.

I have turned the debug log up to verbose on Plex Media Server but I do not know how to read it. I could paste it in here but it's lengthy amount of text so i'm not sure if there is any benefit to what's in there.

These both seem to be pretty simple things but in the little bit of googling I've done it sounds like other people have seen these issues some people have not found resolution. Are these bugs or are these issues with my setup? In all honesty i'm seriously starting to look at Kodi as a potential alternative solution because frankly I just don't have the time to screw around with this anymore, I need something that just works.

If anyone has any tips I would appreciate the help.
Thanks

Update: all my movies are basically in a directory \Movies\Title (Year) format.

Stick with PLEX on my Mac or move to a NAS?

$

This is something I have been researching for a while now and I would love to get some definitive answers if someone would be willing to help out.

I've been using Plex now for over a year (with Plex Pass). I have my media stored on a 2TBx2 RAID and now need more storage. I've been thinking about going with a 2 bay NAS RAID 4TBx2, but I'm not sure whether or not to get a NAS to install PMS on it - as opposed to getting the NAS to just continue to run PMS from my Mac. What are the real advantages to having the PMS be directly installed on the NAS?

My set up is:
1 iMac with 32GB of RAM running Plex with RAID
1 Macbook Pro that would connect to the NAS for backup
Apple TV and Firestick to stream Plex to TVs
2 iPads and 2 iPhones
75mps up/down internet speed

Any advice for NAS models is greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance,
Jay

NAS - Mac Plex Server

Hi all,

I am having some trouble with Plex Server on my Mac. My media is stored on a NAS. For this reason I have turned off automatic updating and set the library to update periodically. Although for some strange reason it continues to update randomly?

Also, when doing the update it seems to keep going over my existing library and 're-recognising'old files. This causes it to take a long time to update, and often doesn't pull the posters and other metadata properly. More annoyingly it stuffs up my 'recently added' constantly filling it with old content.

Has anyone got any ideas how I can resolve?

Custom video tags

I've searched the forums and don't see an answer to this . . . .

Is there a way add custom metadata fields (without being a developer)?  For home movies, Director, Writer etc. is not very useful. . .  I realize Plex was not designed to be a MAM / DAM but metadata tagging is crucial when your library gets large in size.  When I mouse over a video in my library, the overlay pops up and I click the pencil to edit.  The next screen that comes up has a menu on the left containing General, Tags, Poster, Background.  Is there a way to add additional, custom entry fields in the Genreral or Tags section?

And awesome job on this by the way - Plex is extremely useful and well done.

Is there a way to get the PMS to display square cover art for TV shows?

$

Is there any way to enable square cover art or does the PMS lack this capability? A hidden config setting somewhere, perhaps?

I have most of my TV shows tagged with square cover art (rather than the typical vertical posters) because I prefer the way it looks on my TV. Even though I have the PMS set to look at local media assets first, Plex HT, the Plex, and PlexConnect don't display the square cover art.

Both Subler and iFlicks 2 allow you to tag TV shows with square cover art (like what the iTunes Store uses for the TV shows it sells). You can also get square cover art for TV shows from iTunes Artwork Finder and Squared TV Art.

For example:
