Time Machine to Restore Plex Media Server

$

What files do i need to restore to completely restore Plex Media Server from the Time Machine? I have tried restoring the PMS application but it continues not to load.

Since the July Plex update I have not been able to launch Plex and would like to just go back to a previous date when it worked fine.
Thanks,

A litany of problems - number 1 - CPU usage

$

I want Plex to work... I really do.

It shows such promise and other people using it rave about how great it is but - so far - practical use just doesn't match the promise.

The first issue is CPU usage. I have had Plex running for about 4 days now so I thought it would have indexed all my media files, downloaded all the metadata and settled down to just do the odd metadata update now and then (or whatever it does) but a quick look in Activity Monitor shows that it is using a massive amount of CPU time...

It is also VERY slow loading dashboards, libraries and media when using Plex clients (iPad, LG TV, remote Macintosh, etc) or the web version - to the point that it is virtually useless. I could go and make myself a coffee or mix a stiff drink (I need one!) in the time that it takes to launch an episode of a TV show.

If anyone has any ideas what may be causing this I'd love to hear them.

In the meantime it's back to iTunes )-:

This is the first of several issues I am having - I will post more as time goes by under the heading of "A litany of problems - number x...". Stay tuned for more!

"Recently added" as RSS-Feed?

Hi there,

is there a plugin/script/whatever to be able to have rss feeds generated from the "Recently added" filter of the different sections in the database?

I share my library over myPlex with a bunch of friends and family and would like to provide a simple way that they can see whats new in my library. A way to geht the data out of the database would be enough. I could to the xml part for the feed myself.

Any help appreciated.

Local playback on network fine, remote playback via WAN troubles...

Hi, whenever i playback a movie locally LAN on my network to my iPad things are fine (processor hardly at work). As soon as i try to play the same movie on my iPad but on another network via WAN the processor of my Mac Mini goes haywire and to the max and the movie starts to stutter/stop. My ISP connection is 180 Mbps down, 30 Mbps up so that should be sufficient or not? What's the difference between transcoding locally or remotely?

Plex not retrieving metadata

$

I have had a problem for the last few weeks where plex is not getting all the metadata for new media. This has been mostly happening for TV Show and my UFC collection. When i add a new episode most of the time it will get the episode bio but not the title, date, poster or background. I would try matching and unmatching, emptying the trash, cleaning the bundles, force refresh, messing with the agents setting, basically anything i could think of but nothing worked.

After sometime of looking around the forums i found a post about the Plex Caches. Once i had found the folder (~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Caches) and cleared the folders of TMDb and the posters/backgrounds then all of my new media started retrieving the metadata. The only problem is i have to keep deleting the cache as i still sometimes run into this issue.

I just wanted to know if anyone else had been having this issue?
Also is there a permanent fix rather than having to delete the cache constantly?

Major issue playing MKV files from PMS.

So this issue pops up when playing some MKV files. Mostly 1080p. It should be playing direct stream for audio and video, which it does at first. However Plex Media Server will just randomly stop and goes back to the play screen. It will occur at the same spot in the timeline on many different files. If you try to restart playback it happen at the same point during playback over and over again. You can try to bump past the spot but most times you can't get past it.

It's the same on my Apple TV 4, iPhone or the web browser. it will stop at the same spot no matter what. Not just one file but many different files. If and when the file stops, it will stop at the same point each time even after restarting the server. I check the files in VLC and they all work and play with no problem.

I have attached a couple of logs that I pulled after the error happened on two different occasions. I also tried rolling back PMS to a much earlier version but the error still happened. I have used Plex Media Server for over a year now with no issues. This just started happening to me in the last month... Very Frustrating.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Dave

No trailers before movies and PMS crashes after latest update.

Since latest update of PMS, trailers no longer plays before movies (automatically skips right to pre-roll) and PMS crashes right away every time one deletes an object from a client. Same problems no matter which client being used.

Are these known problems that we can expect a fix for anytime soon? Or is it anything I can do to fix it? No problems before latest update and all settings seems fine as far as I know.

Remote access

I have seen other questions about remote access but I feel my question is a bit different. I am using a Mac Mini for my server and I have a T-mobile "cell spot" as my router. Almost a year ago I enabled remote access. I was instructed via plex to go into my router settings and enable UPnP, I did that and BOOM, remote access worked perfectly. I went away for 4 months, when I got back, no remote access at all outside my network. UPnP is still enabled on my router but remote access still doesn't work. I have reset my router serve rap times, it's firmware is up to date, and same with my Mac mini and plex versions are all current. Don't know what the issue is. Anyone experience this too? Any help would be GREAT! Thank you!

PMS scheduled jobs hogging memory

I have been noticing PMS takes up all memory during the nightly scheduled jobs, forcing large memory page-outs. Don't see a reason why these tasks should force page-outs in a system with 32GB memory. PMS 1.0.3.2461-35f0caa running OS X 10.11.

Anyone facing similar issues? Any suggestions to fix the issue?

A litany of problems - number 2 - network access

Thanks to those people that provided potential solutions to my first problem (high CPU usage).
My second problem is with network access.
Initially I had an issue with server mapping - it kept telling me that the client was on a different subnet to the server. Thankfully I have fixed that problem.
What I haven't been able to fix is access from outside the network.
I have tried the help offered by Plex (by clicking the "Learn more" link shown in the screen snap below) but I am unclear of what to do.

I did try specifying a public port (I think this is what helped resolve the subnet issue, but can't be sure).
I also enabled UPnP on my router (maybe THIS is what resolved the subnet issue) but Plex still won't connect to the web at large.
This screen snap shows my network settings in Plex:

Clearly, I have no idea what I'm doing. Reading Plex's help advice hasn't helped me... maybe someone else can explain where I'm going wrong.

Thanks.

Remote Access is disabling of its own accord

Hi, I'm running Plex Server 1.0.3.2461 and each night at around midnight remote access seems to disable itself.

I can resolve the problem by hitting the "Disable Remote access" button and hey presto it's re-enabled.

I hadn't updated it for a while, so thought updating to the newest version would resolve the issue, but it hasn't.

I know my ISP (Virgin Media) doesn't offer static IP addresses to residential customers, but I've been with them for 6 months and it hasn't been an issue until now.

is this a known bug in the software, or do you know of any workarounds, like can i create a scheduled task to disable and re-enable remote access each day at a set time?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Would this Mac Mini work as a PMS?

Mac Mini Late 2014
1.4 GHz intel core i5 processor
4 GB RAM

If not, what would be the minimum requirements fora Mac Mini to have it as a PMS that streams high bitrate 1080p?

Thank you very much in advance for any feedback

My songs are no longer playing...

The last time I was on Plex, everything was perfect. The songs were added flawlessly, played perfectly, and the customization of the pages were a great bonus! A few days passed, and today I go back, add another album the exact same way, and then try to play my music again. Now the music won't play. I click an album, and it will take a moment, read nothing, and then go to the next song, try to read it get nothing, move on, etc. The timer for each song stays at 00:00. The music I added today plays fine, but the albums I added previously are kaput. Help?

Problems with streaming Plex to another country - please help!

Hi all, long time Plex user but first post on here, so please have patience if it is slightly Noob-ish.

Currently I have a setup as follows:

All media on a Synology NAS. This is connected to a Mac Mini (late 2014) in my living room by 1Gb ethernet through the house - so far, so good. Everything plays absolutely smoothely in whatever resolution I throw at it.

My parents however live in a different country to me (Cyprus - where the internet isn't great). They have roughly 8mbps internet, with variable bandwidth / quality. Ideally, I would do all the processing for them on my Mac Mini and just deliver their app whatever stream it wants.

Now, some strange (in my opinion) things have begun to happen. There are 3 shows, let's just call them A, B and C. Shows A and C are on my NAS in 1080p quality. Show B is 720p quality. Film A is also in 1080p quality.

When my parents try to stream Shows A and B, they get the not enough bandwidth error, and if it does run is very stuttery, even when turning the quality settings way down. I even up/downloaded show A to their local machine in 2mb 720p quality and it wouldn't run. Show C and Film A both run fine at native 1080p resolution though.

Can anyone think why this may be? Is there a setting I should change on my Mac Mini Plex Server that would force every piece of content to behave like Show C / Film A?

Thanks for any insight you can offer,
Brett

Recommended setup for large deployment.

I'm not sure if Plex Server is even the right tool, so if it is not, stop me right here!

Planned use is a large media server for low-res MP4 videos ranging from 2 minutes to 2 hours. Videos will be 960x540, 5Mbps MP4 with AAC audio (unless you have a different recommended setting). The library is over 5,000 files.

I'd like to share these out like a VOD server for approximately 20 concurrent users who would access their Plex account and media via web browser on Mac OSX. These 20 users would be local ethernet users, playing different videos, all at the same time. Gigabit network with a 10Gb backbone.

Below is my planned Plex Server setup. Please let me know if Plex Server, as a software solution, is even capable of running in this large of a setup.

Supermicro blade server with 2 x 8-Core Xeon Processors (16-core, 32-threads), 24GB RAM. 2 x SSDs in RAID1 for Linux CentOS operating system (v7 64-bit). 8 x 7200RPM HDDs in RAID5 for media library storage.

Thanks in advance!

Apple's new Photos application

$

Hi,

Plex has worked for me since I've began to use it.  All my content (movies, home video's and photos) are streamed to my other devices.

I made a big mistake recently though  .  I have installed the new Photos application in OS Yosemite and my Aperture library has been moved/changed to Photos.

Now I can't see my photos anymore in Plex.  So I thought I just had to change the settings (Server>Channels) and set the Aperture (or iPhoto) library path to the location of the new Photos library, but this doesn't seem to work.

Also, I tried to make a regular channel for pictures, but this doesn't work either, as you have to choose a regular folder containing your pictures, while Apple stuffs all your pictures into a weird maze of folders and files (see att) when using one of their photo album applications...

So I would like to know if there an update coming from Plex, taking into account the new Photos application?

Or any other suggestions (other than to ditch Apple or their applications :P ...)?

Thanks,

Vincent

Audio 2 Channel Separate Files

Problem with multiple files
Hi there, I recently installed Plex, and it has been amazing to date, with one proviso...

I have a few files that have a separate folder for 2 Channel Audio. They are all MP4s, and I think the encoded audio must be multi-channel.

Unfortunately, the way Plex works, all of these MP4s show up as unlinked Audio 2 Ch files, filling my library with deadlink files.

Of course I could delete them all at source, but I'm assuming this would leave me with only the Multitrack audio...

Is there a way to join the files in some way, either from within Plex or externally?

I'm on Mac, and have tried a few different MP4-MKV encoders, but none seem to do the trick...

Thanks!

Dan
