Problems STILL persist with 'Allow Plex to accept incoming connections???

$

There are some decisions that you regret in life and for me, at the moment, going down the Plex route is one of them. It has been NOTHING but problematic ever since I started with it and I wish I'd just stuck with iTunes and syncing by cable rather then landing myself with this, at the expense of a Lifetime Pass (big mistake) to encounter problem after problem after problem.

Having got remote access working once I set up manual port mapping as opposed to relying on UpNp (which despite seeming to be an extremely flaky option, still seems to be the default recommendation for setting up remote access) I now encounter the certificate signing issue EVERY SINGLE TIME the Mac server I use goes down for whatever reason, requiring me to log into it, remotely if I'm not around and click YES!!! There have been previous threads on this that seem to have just died a death rather than getting anything by way of a definitive answer.

I have tried all the fixes listed such as deleting the media server, doing a fresh install, typing in the sudo command line etc etc etc but EVERY SINGLE TIME the server goes down I have to open it up and tell is YES EVERY SINGLE TIME. So is there any definitive working fix for this problem or not?

At home Plex does NOTHING for me that iTunes doesn't do (and on the ATV 4 iTunes does it with a less confusing interface) and I bought the Plex Pass because I thought I needed it for remote access and to add my wife's user account to give HER remote access (both of which don't seem to require a Plex Pass) and thus I find I actually ONLY need it for the sync, maybe once or twice a year. For all the hassle and time Plex sucks from my life trying to GET it working and KEEP it working reliably, seriously, if I could get the money back I paid for the Pass I'd bin Plex and walk away.

Jumpy streaming not as smooth as it should be, i am new to plex

Hello

i am new to plex and i have just installed plex server onto my mac mini, i have also installed plex onto my two new sony bravia smart tv's

overall i am very impressed with plex i am used to using apple tv and itunes for my library but now i have smart tvs i'd though id explore plex

my library is working fine and its found all the posters and tv show/movie infomation so im very happy with that but when watching movie or the tv shows on both my sony bravia's its seems a little jumpy, its not as smooth as it should be

the downstairs tv is wired direct to my airport extreme router and the tv upstairs is connecting via wifi

i have done tests of the speed of the network and its very fast there should be no problems for streaming direct from my mac

the picture quality is superp bit every 5-6 seconds you can see the playback is a tiny bit jumpy which is very annoying

would there be any settings i would need to adjust on the server at all to help playback be as smooth as it should be? i dont think its problems with the tv's as when watching sky hd everything is very smooth and looks as it should

all my movies and tv shows are converted using handrake before i put them into my library and when using apple tv before i never had this issue

you experienced help would be greatly appreciated

oh and hello everyone by the way my name is Dell

Thanks in advance!

Additional User Creating Playlist Possible?

$

Hello,

My email address and account has a Plex Pass. I use it to sync to my iPhone normally. My wife has been using Plex more lately. I added her email address as an account on the server. However on her iPad which she is signed in with her account she can't see any playlist.

I also logged into the web server with her account and I can't create playlist there either.

So are creating playlist in PMS a Plex Pass feature only? On the iPad I see it says to sync a playlist requires a Plex Pass, but I don't want to spend the money for my wife account if this feature won't work.

Plex localhost folder eating up lots of space

I have an SSD on my Mac, I like running Plex Server on the MacOS as it's native, fast and easy to set up.

However, it's eating up valuable space on the computer with whatever it's caching in each video file.

What can I do to reduce the utilization and is there any way to redirect whatever it's caching to the hard drive my media is stored on?

Dealing with subtitles and "unknown" audio tracks.

As I posted here (originally in "Ask a Ninja!", but it was moved), when PMS is set to display subtitles with foreign audio, videos that have subtitles and only an audio track marked as "unknown", the subtitles are displayed.

Is this a bug, intentional behavior, or is there already a setting to remedy this?  The vast majority of my videos with "unknown" language audio tracks are in my native language.  It would seem that there should be an option to tell PMS that this is the case so subtitles aren't displayed by default on so many of these videos.

Apple's new Photos application

Hi,

Plex has worked for me since I've began to use it.  All my content (movies, home video's and photos) are streamed to my other devices.

I made a big mistake recently though  .  I have installed the new Photos application in OS Yosemite and my Aperture library has been moved/changed to Photos.

Now I can't see my photos anymore in Plex.  So I thought I just had to change the settings (Server>Channels) and set the Aperture (or iPhoto) library path to the location of the new Photos library, but this doesn't seem to work.

Also, I tried to make a regular channel for pictures, but this doesn't work either, as you have to choose a regular folder containing your pictures, while Apple stuffs all your pictures into a weird maze of folders and files (see att) when using one of their photo album applications...

So I would like to know if there an update coming from Plex, taking into account the new Photos application?

Or any other suggestions (other than to ditch Apple or their applications :P ...)?

Thanks,

Vincent

IPAD2 Plex App plays movies but not HDHomeRun Channels

Since this https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/176591/new-ios-4-0-plex-app-wont-play-any-file-on-iphone-nor-ipad#latest** has been "Answered" I have not been able to solve this or find the solution within the forum thus opening a new Forum.

Ok I have read through almost every post and could not come up with the answer to this problem; Maybe I missed something.
1) I have plex version 0.9.16.3.1840-cece46d on Synology ( Most recent PMS)
2) I have an IPAD2 IOS 9.3.2
3) I have HDHomeRun and can view all the channels
4) When I go to play the channel I get the error "Couldn't create the playback session for this item"
5) I can play other media on my IPAD2
6) I can use my IPAD2 Safari to connect to the plex server and play the HDHomerun channels
7) Plex App version is 4.1.2

This is obviously something wrong with the IPAD2 Plex App not supporting the HDHomerun stream content.
I have tried to look into the PMS settings and changed somethings with no luck.
Has anyone figured out this solution?

Plex server seems to use deprecated sleep assertion

$

I like to save energy by allowing my iMac to sleep when possible, even though it's being used as a Plex server. I've got it set up to wake whenever a LAN or internet client wants to stream (DD-WRT router + DDNS). However, I find that the iMac (El Capitan, latest version) doesn't stay awake while streaming. I can see via 'pmset -g assertions' that the Plex server generates the kernel assertion NoIdleSleepAssertion while streaming. Some research (such as this page) seems to indicate that NoIdleSleepAssertion has been deprecated in favor of PreventUserIdleSystemSleep, which is what most other applications seem to use, including iTunes when it is serving media to clients. Do other people running El Capitan find that their server sleeps while streaming? If a developer is reading this, any chance that a future update could be queued to generate PreventUserIdleSystemSleep while streaming?

PMS Crashing when playing video from iPad

For some reason, PMS 0.9.16.6 (OSX 10.11.5) is now crashing when I try to play videos from my iPad, using either the iOS app or the web interface. I can browse just fine using either method, and using OpenPHT on another mac or using the web interface on the server itself, I am able to play videos.

There are no logs here:
~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Crash Reports/
~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/

I did find logs under ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and under ~/Library/Logs/Plex Media Server

Any ideas?

Plex Media Scanner - not updating library (automatically or on schedule)

$

Hi there,

I'm having a little problem with the updating of my PMS library of both TV Shows & Movies.

To elaborate further, this is my current setup:

1. PMS installed on Mac Mini

2. Both TV Shows/Movies are housed in my Synology box

3. Folder is mapped onto Mac Mini via AFP.

4. Folders and files to both TV Shows and Movies are in accordance to the recommended structure from Plex.

Previously both auto and schedule library updates did automatically detect changes to both TV Shows and Movies folders when changes were made (e.g. Adding a new series or a new movie).

I recently performed a reboot to my Mini and after which the updating of my media files became a bit wonky. The initial library update worked and the subsequent ones failed to be invoked. I've tried the scheduled (15 mins) and it fails as well.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Plex loading issues on PS4, Apple TV and Apple iphone

I've used Plex with no issues over the last 2 years and out of the blue videos no longer will play on any of my devices. I'm running El Capitan 10.11.5 on Mac with no play back issues. I haven't made any changes to any of my devices for this error to occur. I installed Plex on my mac to try and clear up any issues and singed out and in on all devices, but no luck. My media library shows up on all my devices put videos will never load and play.

Any ideas?

Plex using wrong cover art for albums

$

This behavior has been broken in Plex for quite a while and the current behavior is really annoying.

What happens?

  1. add new album to music library
  2. adjust covers so that one has the tag "front cover" while other images have "other". Kodi e.g. then understands which image to use as album cover. Plex does not.

  3. Plex, for whatever obscure reason, which needs to be investiaged and fixed, selects seemingly randomly any of the images (often times not the one tagged as front cover) and uses that as album art.

This is super-annoying. Please fix this beahvior / bug. It has been going on for a long time and it makes no sense at all.

I would be very happy if a plex dev could elaborate what's going on here. It seems this has been discussed in a few other threads and all users dealing with music seem to be highly frustrated by the current behavior so "Houston, we have a problem".

Brief search turned up (didn't bother to spend more time searching for all related threads)

Plex reporting bad connection after a PC to Mac upgrade, same settings, same network.

So recently I bought a dedicated server for my plex. It's a dual socket board with 2x Xeon Quad core (16 Threads), 16GB ECC ram, 512GB SSD cache (render / seed), 32TB HDD space. It's a Mac Pro, bought it for 300 of my work because we upgraded some stuff.

It's standing right next too my regular PC who served me as a good Plex for months.

OS : OSX 10.11.5
PS : 0.9.16.6

Everything is the same setup as my windows Plex was, I changed the IP in my router for the port forwarding, setup a library and went testing.

I am now miles away staying with a friend and noticed that opening a video takes a while before it plays, and when taking the exact same video file on my windows it plays almost seamlessly instant.

Plex not loading correct metadata

$

Over the last few days Plex hasn't been loading up the correct metadata for my media. It started off with not loading the episode names for tv shows and now it won't load the images for my UFC media, both of which i have had no issue up till now.

It has loaded the first episode correctly and then not done the same for the rest of the episodes in the season, they are just showing there original file name. I have tried removing the media from my hard drive, emptying the trash, cleaning the bundles and then reloading the season back in and still the same issue. I have tried unmatching the media then matching it again with still the same problem.

Same with my UFC media i have tried all of the above and still the images are not loading from TMDb as there were before.

Need some help please as this is driving me insane!

Plex won't add new content ....

$

Strange issue that I seem to be having ...

Little background, my library is old, been using plex for far to long and adding files in the right names and such isn't a problem; added some new movies and TV shows in bulk, waited for the copy to complete then hit the update library button and nothing is added (get the messages in the messages in the Status Alerts link on the plex web app), but no content is added.

Ran through the repair database help, nothing, all came back clear.

I backed up my database, deleted it then ran a library update (added back all the TV show directories) and things are updating fine (sees all shows and new shows and updates); after it was done, i deleted the database, copied my original back, ran a library update and same problem no updates are shown.

I don't use auto refresh/scan, i just ran the library update manually as and when; the log files didn't seem to show any errors, but then the log showed no record of a new show that i have added recently.

Any ideas on what this could be? Don't really want to start from scratch, library is far too big for that!

Thank
Phil.

Error occurred while decoding the media

Running on a MacBook Pro with a Sony TV client. Some movies will play for about 28-30 minutes then they freeze followed by "Error occurred while decoding the media"
This has happened on more than one movie but not all. the same movie will continue to freeze in the same spot on the tv but when played on the Mac itself the movie does not freeze or stop.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Sub-Zero 1.3.33.522 - Insufficient Permissions from Mac OS X (10.11.5)

$

0

I had Sub-Zero 1.3.33.522 working fine. Then I bought a Synology NAS. I soon learned that as great as a NAS is, it has its issues.

I had an error with Sub-Zero. As soon as I opened the Sub-Zero channel every library showed "Insufficient Permissions" See the screenshot attached.

My whole Plez set of library folders were in a typical "Shared Folder" structure. To fix this I just went to the NAS control panel and created a user named as my Plex admin and gave it the same password. I then gave this new user permission to read and write to my the whole Plex shared set of folders. Fixed! Well....

Everything worked but I did not enjoy the instant updates when I dropped new movies into my libraries as you do with a direct connected drive. I learned also a NAS is NOT the same a direct connected drive in that it does not inform the OS of file changes immediately as a direct connected drive does. In Plex this meant the "Update my library automatically" stopped working. I have to use the "Update my library periodically" instead. I did not like that.

So I learned about iSCSI connections. That makes a NAS react more like a direct connected drive because amoung other thing it is a dedicated connection to just one computer and the OS treats it as a typical internal drive once all is set up.

Now I had PMS watching folders like a directly connected drive and all works now EXCEPT I get the error for each library "Insufficient Permissions" again AND I can not control users and permissions from the NAS control panel anymore because the OS is in control now.

I have tried a few things. From the computer connecting via iSCSI I created a "File sharing user" and I gave the whole drive permission to read & write to the user named the same as my Plex admin with the same password. didn't work. I tried selecting "Ignore ownership on this volume". Didn't work.
