Hardware Transcoding crashing PMS

$

Just tried out hardware transcoding, and PMS immediately crashes. Client shows this error:

An error occurred trying to play "movie name goes here".
shaka1002 (Network)

PMS Log shows this:

Oct 04, 2017 10:14:40.448 [0x10b6ed000] ERROR - get - invalid frameRate value: 24.000
Oct 04, 2017 10:14:40.615 [0x10b6ed000] ERROR - [Transcoder] [dash @ 0x7fda5380e800] Cannot use rename on non file protocol, this may lead to races and temporary partial files
Oct 04, 2017 10:15:00.086 [0x10c354000] ERROR - get - invalid frameRate value: 24.000

Running i5-2500k on Mavericks (10.9.5), which supports QuickSync. I know Sandy Bridge was the first architecture to support QuickSync, so not sure what the restrictions are on it, but it should revert back to software transcoding instead of hardware if it doesn't support the frame rate, etc. Crashing PMS is not okay.

Hardware Transcoding on macOS and nVidia GPU?

Hi, I have an nvidia GPU on my Sierra box running PMS. Is HW transcoding possible?

New Features? Or Problems?

I've been using Plex on my Mac Mini for years. I had set it up for two (2) trailers to play before a movie. The previews are no longer playing and it goes right into the movie.

Secondly, all videos I watch are starting paused. Meaning I click on a video to play, after loading it will come up paused and I will have to manually unpause the video before it plays. This used to just start without my having to unpause anything.

Are these new features of Plex or did something break? Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is PMS safe & 100% compatible w/High Sierra...if not what are the differences.

Okay, @elan! I'm not sorry asking this Q, but AM I SAFE upgrading my PMS server to High Sierra...

I would've assumed a blog post would be out.
I would've assumed the app would've told me if it wasn't

BUT

I've seen everything from:
"Up/Down" buttons on AppleTV remote don't work right after upgrade to High Sierra.
to
Plex Media Player crashing on start on MacOs (High) Sierra)

SO, since I'm assuming I got your attention with my previous thread https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/288954/really-ticked-about-plex-appletv-ios-etc-lately-youre-a-business-act-like-it#latest I would've assumed you would've put notes out or a post out about OS X's newest release! If not WHY?
You SAID you're working at getting better at communication (in that thread)...prove it!

Am I safe updating...and if there are bugs, what are they? You OWE us this much! I have family that depends on this daily. I have many people that rely on my media server and I need to know if i can update.

With all due respect (or the respect you earn by proving you are doing what you SAID you would do last week)

Music metadata - artist/album/track titles filled with slashes

I'm setting up a music library for the first time with Plex. I pointed Plex to a NAS copy of my primary iTunes library, which is quite large (~200GB). It's taking a long time to DL all the metadata, over 20 hours and maybe a bit over 50% done. OK I expected that. However, several artists' names have multiple slashes appended and often, but not in all cases, these artists' albums' names also have multiple slashes. If an album has this naming issue, then all of the tracks on the album also have slashes. If the only solution is that I have to either live with this or fix manually, then I'm done with Plex as a music server. I was interested in using Plex with Sonos for my personal library as a way to avoid Sonos' library size limitations.
Any help out there?

[Note: not sure about protocol here. I just posted this as a comment to what looked like an earlier question that had no responses for several months. Sorry for multiple posts]

Does anyone know what the following message really means and it's implications? Running 10.13 and Little Snitch 4.0.3

I'm getting a warning from Little Snitch (pictured). It's reporting that Scrapmagnet (whatever that is) does not have a valid code signature. Does anybody know what it means and it's implications?

Does PMS on Mac no longer allow you to import iTunes playlists?

$

I still manage my music library in iTunes (for various reasons). After adding new songs to playlists there, I always go into PMS on the same Mac, go to the Playlists section in Plex and click the "Import from iTunes" button and have it overwrite all the existing playlists in Plex. This process allows me to have updated Plex playlists that mirror my iTunes playlists. I did this as recently as 9/24/17.

But today when I tried doing that,** there's no longer any "Import from iTunes" button in the Playlist section of PMS**! How happened? I can't find any way to import playlists now!

Dealing with subtitles and "unknown" audio tracks.

As I posted here (originally in "Ask a Ninja!", but it was moved), when PMS is set to display subtitles with foreign audio, videos that have subtitles and only an audio track marked as "unknown", the subtitles are displayed.

Is this a bug, intentional behavior, or is there already a setting to remedy this?  The vast majority of my videos with "unknown" language audio tracks are in my native language.  It would seem that there should be an option to tell PMS that this is the case so subtitles aren't displayed by default on so many of these videos.

Video Transcoding Performance Issues

Hey,
I have a mac mini about 5 years old with an i5 in it, and 8GB of RAM
media is stored on 2 different Drobo external enclosures, one is aon on gen2 which is connected over FireWire800, the other is a Drobo 5D which is connected via Thunderbolt, and then streamed to a Raspberry Pi 3 running RasPlex.

I also run media to AppleTVs so I have iTunes feeding media from these drives as well.

I have found that any media that I have already converted to .MP4 to be ready for iTunes seems to stream via plex with absolutely no problems, no stuttering or anything; however, any media that I have not yet converted seems to play for about 1 min, then stop, buffer for a long time, play another min or 2, stop, buffer for a long time, repeat.
I am trying to figure out where the bottle neck is. Should FW800 be fast enough to live transcode? If not, what about Thunderbolt? Or maybe the problem is the Drobo isnt fast enough (surely it isnt fast enough to saturate thunderbolt is it?). If none of these sound like problems then I assume the ol' mac mini just doesnt have the processing power to keep up?
Not really sure what numbers I need to be looking for and where to identify where the real problem is, or if I have multiple problems going here.

Thanks for any advise!

[Help] Plex Transcoder crashes with no log details

$

I recently bought a Plex Pass for the mobile sync feature but it has only been working with my movies and music but not with my TV shows. The problem herein arises when Plex goes to transcode the media in any way. These TV shows used to play beautifully, but recent updates have rendered them unplayable in Plex (yet they play fine in VLC.) Some TV shows transcode fine, and some refuse to play or sync, a.k.a. the obscure "The transcoder was unable to process this media." error and when playing "The transcoder crashed or failed to start..." error.

I am on the latest version of Plex (Version 1.8.0.4109 at the time of writing) and the latest version of macOS (Version 10.12.6 (16G29) at the time of writing). Some TV shows do work, so at first I suspected it was an issue loading the font for the subtitles, but the crash report from the Plex Transcoder indicates that it was some sort of memory corruption issue. It was under my impression that this was fixed for 1.8.0, and I see no details about it in the log besides the Job Handler stating that the transcoder quit because of signal 11.

Here is a relevant excerpt of the crash report:

Process: Plex Transcoder [1973]
Path: /Applications/Plex Media Server.app/Contents/MacOS/Plex Transcoder
Identifier: Plex Transcoder
Version: 0
Code Type: X86-64 (Native)
Parent Process: Plex Media Server [1944]
Responsible: Plex Transcoder [1973]
User ID: 501

Date/Time: 2017-08-13 21:03:55.991 -0400
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.12.6 (16G29)
Report Version: 12

System Integrity Protection: enabled

Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: EXC_I386_GPFLT
Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

Termination Signal: Segmentation fault: 11
Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 0xb
Terminating Process: exc handler [0]

Just for laughs, I booted up Plex Server Version 0.9.8.6 and the TV show played beautifully (even though the Flash Player was a bit crappy.) I'm not sure what has happened between these two, but there have been changes made to the transcoder that obviously have been detrimental. I wanted to try a version after 1.0.0.0, but alas, there seem to be no archive for downloads, which I think is unfortunate at the least, especially because that makes it impossible to pinpoint exactly where it went wrong. Maybe the file is not being loaded correctly? I can watch it convert about 7% of the way in and then it just crashes. I have plenty of free space (20+ GB on my main drive and 91+ GB on my external drive) so memory, RAM (16GB) and computing resources (2.9 GHz i7) don't seem to be a problem.

Any help is appreciated, especially if someone could point me towards a version of Plex a few versions back (but not quite as old as pre-1.0.) I'm really scratching my head here... the Plex Dance has failed me.

Totally Confused

Ok straight up I'll offer an apology for this question as am sure it's something simple and I'm just missing it.

I'm wanting to copy/move my Photo library on my Mac (8000 pics) onto Plex. My Plex library is stored on a NAS and runs fine. When I select the add the New Library (Photos & Mobile Photos) I select my MacOS Photo Library and the upload begins. So far so good.

The trouble I'm having though is that it's actually uploading back to my Mac and is taking up unnecessary space. Ok so stop the upload, delete the Library, but find that I can't find the folder anywhere eon my Mac to get back space.

I thought it would upload/copy to my NAS, but appears not.

So my 2 questions -

1 - What am I doing wrong
&
2 - How do I get my space back

Thanks :)

Is it necessary to have a VPN with Plex?

$

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this, but since my server is on a Mac Mini, I figured I would start here.

First, I've been having a hell of a time configuring my Plex server to work behind a VPN. Any time the VPN is active, I get a Double-NAT error in the Remote Access Settings menu. Since I use VyprVPN, I am able to selectively disable or require the use of the VPN for individual applications.

So I started wondering, is it really necessary to have Plex running behind a VPN? I am usually just using it on my LAN. Occasionally I will watch something on my phone or iPad when I am away from home, but I don't give out the login info so it's only me. So do I really need to worry if it's not behind the VPN?

By the way, I've been very happy with VyprVPN, especially since they allow you to have specific connection rules for individual apps. I don't want to sound like a commercial (and I'm not affiliated) but if you go to https://goldenfrog.com/vyprvpn/refer-a-friend/get-a-free-month?ar=1rs8niq934v34_1 you can get a free month of service.

But back to my original question ... does anyone have any thoughts on whether or not it is important to keep Plex behind the VPN?

I've checked across different file types avi, mp4, mkv and none of them are using hardware transcoding when I check the activity status of the file playing.
I've double checked I enabled the hardware accleration, I've confirmed I've met all the system requirements for a mac. Any ideas?

If PMS is running with no active transcoding sessions video input freezes a few seconds after loading FaceTime/Photo Booth or after starting call with Skype. Stopping PMS and restarting video call fixes issue.
