When displaying a list of movies, Plex appears to rely solely on the “date modified” or “date added” file attribute for each movie. Based on this attribute, it displays a year under each movie title, and also uses this date to group movie listings under meta-titles such as "Videos from 2013" and "Videos from the 2000s".
As a result, every movie thumbnail displays the year when the file was imported or converted, instead of the year in which the movie was actually released. Plex wrongly displays groups of movies as being from a completely wrong time period. Any searches or filtering by year is likewise broken, based on the file date instead of the year when the film was released. The only place where the date is used accurately is a section titled "Recently added".
So for example, if you add a movie to your library today that was released in 1984, that movie will appear as if it were released in 2015... even if the movie's metadata includes the correct year of release.
There is no excuse for this, given that the metadata already contains a field for the year when the movie was released, there is no reason why Plex should rely on the file date. and misrepresent it as the publish date
How can we change this behavior to prevent being bombarded with nonsensical movie groupings based on incorrect dates?
