mac os and roku3, suddenly can't access server, tried all advice so far

first of all I have spent time looking for an answer on the forums. my plex has been working for many months fine no problem (mac book pro El Capitain) then suddenly can't the server. I know how to sign into the server on my mac. I can watch on my mac fine. but the tv (roku app) suddenly can't find it. On the computer I can find the roku in devices and it looks activated (also activated in the bar). I signed in and out of the tv roku app several times to see if that was it. Direct (GD) is toggled on. I thought maybe it was an issue with secure connections so I disabled this (found this on the forum). So I am stumped now.
i did update the plex software could that have done this?

i also downloaded (again) latest player and deleted app from roku and reloaded it there on the tv/roku.
i also (from some other persons post) disabled secure connections in both computer app and roku app. my
computer seems to "see" my roku and say the connection is fine (using the four letter code sign in)
so once again I am out of ideas

everything is up to date on my mac
plex app is up to date
reinstalled plex app on roku

stumped
frustrated
