I'm currently in the process of setting up Plex on a new Apple TV I'm gifting my sister. Hoping to share my server with her.
My home and server are in California. My sister lives on the East coast. Here are our internet speeds:
Home/server: 151.3 mbps down / 17.4 mbps up
Sister: 6.4 mbps down / .74 mbps up
My connection is much better than my sisters, but with her download speed she should be able to stream when she's not doing anything else on her network. I've been trying to stream on her network with Plex on my iPhone and also via my browser on my MacBook. I'm getting constant pauses to buffer. Once in a while I'll be able to go 10 minutes without needing to buffer. My Plex is on a WD PR2100 NAS at home and when streaming locally the transcoding is great and I haven't had any issues. Outside of my network is when I get issues.
I've disabled direct play and direct stream with little difference. Do I select the remote quality on my server or on the player? Currently the remote streaming on my server is set to 2 mbps/720P and the player set to 1.5 mbps/480P and still experiencing pauses to buffer. Not sure of the ideal remote stream settings for both ends. Should Direct Play/Stream affect remote streaming?
Haven't set up the Apple TV yet because it's still packaged up waiting for her to open on Christmas. Wanted to iron out the problems before I configure it all.
