Hi all,
I have buffering issues with my plex setup, i have tried loads and im at a total loss as to what could be causing it. Any help greatly appreciated.
The setup:
I have a MacPro as my Plex Media Server, this is wired to a Netgear router, which is wired to a Virgin Superhub, which is then wired to my gaming PC running windows 10.
The reason for my complicated wiring setup, is that i have a long flat, so i have the virgin superhub as the internet connected router, and then the netgear acts as the wireless router. However, for the issue i have, its all wired.
I play movies on my Gaming PC which is on my big TV.
The Problem:
If i use the plex app, i get constant buffering. It really is poor. To the point i can start to play a movie and it will buffer after 10 seconds.
If i use Firefox on the gaming PC, it works like a dream, until around 1 hour into the movie and then it says that the network is not quick enough. I then close the browser, run open it and it will run then buffer, run then buffer.
I have checked the CPU load on the Media Server, and the CPU is hardly being used (the 4 cores are being used at around 5%)
What have i done to fix it so far!
Firstly, as my movies are being transcoded i have looked at how the media server sends out the movie file. On all my movies, i play them at 1080, and this is done by direct stream for the video, and transcoding for the audio. Plex always shows as 'Transcoding throttled'.
This makes me think it is my network. However, i run CAT5e cabling, and the MacPro is capable of downloading from the internet with quick speeds, so the cabling is sound.
I have checked the load on the network itself, playing a movie and then making sure nothing else is on, same issue.
I have tried playing around with the different mbps setting in plex, but i cant see why i would need to go down to 720 resolution. If the system is capable of running at 1080 for an hour, then it shouldnt need to bump down.
I am also running the movie at 'original' quality.
Any help really appreciated, im a little bit at a loss as to how it can work for an hour and then stop...
