Hi Guys,
I was wondering if someone would be able to offer me some advice on an issue I'm having playing back 4K content.
I current am running PMS on a MacMini.
Core i5 - I5-3210M @ 2.5 Ghz
8GB Ram
I can have a few 1080p streams running at the same time, no issue however when it comes to playing 4K content I cannot seem to figure out what the bottleneck is. The playback is essentially no existent and I don't believe it is a (local) bandwidth issue. Everything in question is hard wired 1Gbps ethernet.
I am using an Apple TV 4 which is not playing back the content and yes I know it doesn't support 4K yet but it should play it back, its buffering too much and unwatchable.
I tried using Apple TV apps like Infuse/VLC to directly play the file over the network however that didn't work as the apple TV doesn't have enough power to do so.
I tried using the Plex app on my Sony 4K TV.(kd-65x8500b) I toggled the direct play/steam switches on the Plex app and it made no difference.
Just to test network bandwidth I played the video directly over SMB network sharing and Wifi and it played perfectly.
However as another test, I logged into Plex web interface, via Wifi on my 5K iMac which has no issues playing back 4K files, and it could barely play indicating to me that its the server/CPU (Derrr).
I took the raw file, placed it onto a USB drive, straight into the TV, works perfectly....
So I'm assuming its not a network bandwidth issue, its a server/CPU issue.
So my question is how can I get my TV to play these files directly.... what device would people recommend?
Im so curious, if my TV can handle playing the file directly from USB, why wouldn't it "direct play/stream" over the network? Does that mean the crappy Plex app that i downloaded on my TV isn't working correctly?
