So, I have this hard drive enclosure for my Mac Mini, the miniStack. It is quieter than many external enclosures, but it is not silent because the fan runs all the time. If the hard drive is only used for serving up music and occasionally movies, is it necessary to keep the fan connected? I have had a few fanless enclosures in the past (aluminum, no doubt a heat sink) but I was wondering if I could disconnect the miniStack fan for my 6 TB Hitachi drive without damaging either the drive or the enclosure. It's not like I'm streaming all the time - usually only music, but movies once or twice a week. It sits under an i5 Mac Mini.
