Hello together,
my dream setup is the ability to let any plex client automatically wake up my mac mini that runs the PMS. So far i have WOL working via an iOS App (iNet WOL) and can access the server after sending the magic packet manually.
My questions is: Are the Plex Clients able to send out a magic packet by themselves? I read contradictory statements regarding this question. Some people say their PMS wakes up automatically while being in the same LAN others say this works only on the same LAN but never from outside the network.
For me, automatic wake up does not work at all. This might be because i manually disabled the Sleep Proxy Function of my Mac mini as i did not want to have those 2 hour wakeups all day. Right now my Mac only wakes up via a Magic Packet.
My question: Should any client from outside my network be able to wake my mac up without any setup? Some say yes others say no. I found this tutorial (https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/35xw5t/how_to_set_your_computer_to_sleep_and_wake_on_an/) that explains how to run a script on your Router (via DDWRT) to check for traffic on port 32400 and then ping the PMS and wake it via magic packet if ping fails. Good work! Will go for this method if you guys can tell me that there is no other "cleaner" way. I wonder if anyone has this working without using DDWrt?
Does your Mac turn on when you try to access it via Plex App or Plex.tv? Any special settings required? Due to safety reasons i opened up port 6345 and forwarded it to port 9 internally for sending magic packets. Does this hinder the Plex Clients magic Packets to get through to my Mac Mini?
All in all:
- Do Plex Clients send Magic Packets from outside the network to wake up the PMS?
- Is there a way to configure anything regarding that like changing the port the clients try to send the magic packet to?
- Does your PMS on a Mac Mini / OSX wake up, if you try to access it from outside your network via Plex.tv or your iOS client?
Thank you :)
