If you're thinking that's a rude header, it's because I had to f*cking register just to ask a question and there are absolutely no support options for Plex beyond asking questions into the void of the forums (like this).
With that out of the way ... can anyone point to a site anywhere on the web where Plex is actually explained in simple straightforward language without all the misdirection, advertisements, feature blah-blah, and requests to send money?
I got the app on my Apple TV and I want to make my home computer a server for content. Simples no? One would think, but no.
To make the server, you have to download an app from the website, which arrives not in a DMG (totally stupid) and requires me to randomly trust the website (double stupid). It doesn't even look like the app is signed to me, but that's a different issue altogether.
Starting this app, takes you back to the f*cking website (usually something done only by the shadiest and most likely to steal your data companies). It drops you at a "sign-in screen" to make your "account" despite numerous pages on he web describing Plex that say you DON'T HAVE TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT. There is no "just click the button that says you don't want an account" (as advised by several web sites I have already visited.
There is no support for this product (beyond the endless scrolling, bewildering, confusing multiplicity of garbage "product descriptions"), and this forum, (which seems heavily edited and sparsely populated).
Some questions that arise:
- Is there a server app at all? All mine does is take me to the website to enrol in a lot of nonsense I don't want.
- under what conditions can I make my server app actually work as a server app?
- where are the settings for the server app?
- why, since I literally NEVER WANT to use a web site as mediation between my home computer and my TV set, can't I just do that?
- Isn't this what Plex is actually for?
- Do I really have to create an account with a (seemingly insecure) web site just to use your app?
- Is Plex in the business of letting people stream their media, or is it really just about f*cking people around?
- Seriously, is this whole Plex thing just a joke or what?
