I run a 2011 i5 Mac Mini as a Plex server, but I've had AMD Radeon graphics problems which (I've since found) are known to affect this model. I'm hoping the local Mac tech can bring it back to life, and I wonder if reducing the transcoding workload would keep it cooler and help prolong its life in future. My video files are almost all in 720p/1080p h264 .mkv format and I've read I can apparently change container to .mp4 fairly simply with ffmpeg.
TL;DR: would mp4 media keep my mac mini cooler than mkv?
